PITTSBURGH: An Explorer's Guide

Allentown is one of two neighborhoods in Pittsburgh where the streetcars still run on the street. Beechview is the other one. But Beechview, where all the light-rail traffic from all the South Hills routes is funneled through the center of the neighborhood, takes its streetcars for granted. Allentown, on the other hand, fought long and hard to keep its pokey little branch line. The fight was worth it. The Allentown Trolley not only links Allentown to downtown, but it also gives the neighborhood an active spine along Warrington Avenue.

Allentown's steep hills can create curious only-in-Pittsburgh phenomena like this attic garage on Arlington Avenue.

A garage in the attic.

TRANSIT: Visit Allentown on the Route 52 streetcar, otherwise known as the the Allentown Trolley.
