PITTSBURGH: An Explorer's Guide

The tower of Sacred Heart Church in ShadysideShadyside is one of the liveliest neighborhoods in Pittsburgh, and it's a fascinating mix of contrasting styles. It's the richest neighborhood per capita in the city, but there are still affordable apartments. There are busy shopping streets and quiet shady avenues, tiny rowhouses and enormous mansions.

It's also a very cultured neighborhood. At least four of the churches have regular concert series. Many of Pittsburgh's best classical musicians live in Shadyside, and on a warm summer evening you can hear a violin here or an oboe there as you stroll through the quiet back streets.

Shopping is the main thing that brings outsiders into Shadyside. Walnut Street is lined with trendy chain stores like Williams-Sonoma and Banana Republic, as well as one-of-a-kind restaurants and boutiques, and every year it hosts the Shadyside Walnut Street Arts Fair. Laid-back Ellsworth Avenue has an odd mix of one-off shops, coffeehouses, and restaurants. Highland Avenue is a good place to look for antiques.Sacred Heart Church
