Greater Pittsburgh Museum Council
A list and descriptions of all 50 local museums that belong to this organization.

The Andy Warhol Museum
Seven floors of Warhol art and memorabilia. The largest single-artist museum in the world.

Carnegie Museum of Art
Especially known for its collection of Impressionists, and host of the Carnegie International, one of the world's most important forums for new art. The Hall of Architecture has a superb collection of life-size architectural casts--many of them now in better condition than the original monuments.

Carnegie Museum of Natural History
Everybody comes to see the dinosaurs--one of the world's best collections. But don't miss the Hillman Hall of Minerals and Gems, the Hall of African Wildlife, and all the other fascinating exhibits. Easily a whole day's excursion for a family.

Carnegie Science Center
"Nintendo on steroids," one local paper called it. Hands-on science exhibits and a real submarine. Kids love it, but adults will enjoy it, too.

Center for American Music at the Stephen Foster Memorial
"Dedicated to expanding and documenting knowledge of American music and its cultural and social roles in American life."
.
Frick Art and Historical Center
The Frick Art Museum has a small but important permanent collection, plus space for traveling exhibits. Clayton, the mansion of zillionaire Henry Clay Frick, is on the same property, along with a carriage museum and a conservatory.

Heinz Pittsburgh Regional History Center
Fascinating re-creations of every era in Pittsburgh's past, from pre-colonial days to the Space Age.

Hunt Institute for Botanical Documentation
Exhibits of botanical art and a huge botanical archive.

The Lemoyne House
An 1812 stone house in the town of Washington, southwest of Pittsburgh. Once a stop on the Underground Railway, now it's the home of the Washington County Historical Society.

The Mattress Factory
One of America's most important collections of site-specific contemporary art.

The National Aviary
Birds from everywhere, many in free-flight rooms where you can watch them in something like their natural habitat. Possibly the best facility of its kind in North America.

Pennsylvania Trolley Museum
Ride historic trolleys in a pleasant rural setting southwest of Pittsburgh.

Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens
One of the great Victorian glasshouses, lovingly maintained and filled with exotic plants from all over the world. Already huge, it's scheduled for a major expansion in the near future.

The George Westinghouse Museum
In the ornate chateau-style headquarters of the old Westinghouse Air Brake Company, this museum is dedicated to the life and accomplishments of one of the greatest inventors of all time.
