Manchester is almost unique among restored Pittsburgh neighborhoods in
that its restoration was done without displacing the original population.
(The Mexican War Streets still retain
some of their original working-class residents, but large numbers of them
have been replaced by artists and yuppies.) Much of the restoration money
came from Richard Mellon Scaife, publisher of the right-wing Tribune-Review.
Although Manchester suffered some from the worst excesses of urban redevelopment
before it was restored--its entire business district was bulldozed and
replaced with suburban ranch houses--most of the streets have remained
intact. Today its population is still mostly working-class, although some
of the bigger houses are inhabited by restoration maniacs.
